INTRODUCTION


For more than half a century, the shape of commercial aircraft has remained largely unchanged. Today’s airliners follow the same “tube-and-wing” architecture pioneered in the 1950s. JetZero, an aerospace startup, is rewriting that playbook with the JetZero Demonstrator: a full-scale blended wing body (BWB) aircraft designed to deliver 30% greater aerodynamic efficiency than traditional airframe designs, which will deliver up to 50% reduced fuel burn per passenger mile. Backed by a $235 million U.S. Air Force investment, the Demonstrator is targeting first flight in 2027—a pace nearly unheard of in modern aviation.

With STC providing hands-on modeling and training, the Demonstrator team developed a more cohesive digital thread, one that reveals gaps in the architecture, strengthens subject matter expert understanding and aligns previously siloed engineering teams around a unified system view. The MBSE models enable engineers to identify conflicts and risks earlier than ever, ensuring that potential costly issues are resolved well before physical testing.   2. DELIVERING THE CDR ON TIME AND UNDER BUDGET

    The CDR for Demonstrator marked a pivotal validation point. This integration dramatically reduced CDR prep time and minimized the generation of manual artifacts—replacing thousands of static documents with interactive model navigation for design logic, dependencies and test coverage.

    Although JetZero’s team is smaller than those of legacy aerospace manufacturers, MBSE has enabled it to operate at enterprise scale. EXPOSING GAPS EARLY


The integrated system model revealed discrepancies between a supplier’s fuel system model and JetZero’s internal fuel system definition, as well as misalignments in architectural definitions across multiple systems engineering teams. By making these differences visible in a shared, authoritative model, STC was able to close communication gaps, reconcile assumptions and align system definitions early—reducing downstream rework and integration risk.
